Welcome Back to School

Welcome to 3^rd Grade!

I'm very excited to have your child in 3^rd grade for the 2016-2017 school year! We look forward to helping our students become both team players and independent problem solvers.

The transition from 2^nd grade to 3^rd grade is a huge jump. Our students are moving into a learning environment where the stakes are much higher than ever before. 3^rd grade is the first time that they will take both the STAAR Reading and Math assessments at the end of the year, and there is much work to do from the very first day to ensure that our kids are ready for that jump to 4^th grade.

A couple of things are very important to guarantee the success of our 3^rd graders. First, attendance and being on time must be a priority. A lot of what will be covered from day to day happens in the first 30 minutes of each day. We understand that sometimes things happen, but we have to do all we can to be on time and to miss as little instruction time as possible.

I strongly encourage you to be as involved as you can to better your child’s learning. Please participate in many different ways as possible. We will have a list of options for you at our Parent Orientation Night (details to come…).

I have high expectations, and are very optimistic about the year and what it will bring. Our kids are our future. Together, let’s have a wonderful and remarkable journey!

 The STAAR mathematics and reading assessments for grades 3, 4, 6, and 7 will be administered the week of May 9–13, 2016. Districts will receive reports for STAAR 3–8 assessments by June 15, 2016.

3rd Grade Winter Holiday 2014 Book Project

Assigned: December 19, 2014

Due: January 12, 2015

Students who return the completed project on January 6^th (the first day back after the holiday) will receive a sorbet treat.

Project: Students will read a chapter book appropriate to their level (preferably some type of fiction), write a book review, and design their own book cover.

Guidelines:

The book review has three paragraphs. Each paragraph’s contents are outline below.

Paragraph One:

●      Tells the book’s title and author

●      Names the main characters

●      Tells what the book is about

Paragraph Two:

●      Tell what is your favorite part and why

●      Tell what important events take place in this part

Paragraph Three:

●      Tell what big problem the main character faces

●      Tell what the main character learns

The book cover will be a piece of card stock (provided) folded in half crosswise. The front cover must include an original illustration of a scene from the book, the title, and the author. The back cover must include a three sentence summary and personal review. Example below:

This book is about (who). It takes place (where) and (when). What happens, and why?

I would (not) recommend this book because…

The book review will be graded on grammar, mechanics, and accuracy of content. The book cover will be scored on the accuracy of the summary and neatness.
